holds tremendous travel potential—if you can manage a little
planning. To leave all the worries and stress behind and touch the
boundaries of extreme fun and relaxation with friends and family, I
will suggest you to plan these long weekends. Today I am here to help
you for the same.
Now
Let me know your choice. Want to enjoy wild nature? Or you like the
silent adventure carvers? Are you foodie? Do you have interest in art
& sculpture? Then West Bengal is the right state where in a
single package you get all these things.
West
Bengal, located in Eastern India, is fourth-most populous state. With
the Himalayan range on the north to Bay of Bengal in the south, lush
green forest and wide range of historic evidence & Pilgrim
destinations; West Bengal has varied option of tourism products to
offer to its tourists.
Lets
start our virtual tour to West Bengal. If your pocket support, book
an advance flight ticket from Delhi to Kolkata. You can opt a17-24hrs
long train journey also. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International
Airport at Kolkata, is the state's biggest airport. Bagdogra Airport,
near Siliguri, is another one. To get ride of summer, I will suggest
you to choose Bagdogra as your landing point. It is situated at the
north of the state. From here, by road you will reach the north-most
district of the state Darjeeling within 3-4 hrs.
Darjeeling
is fondly known as the ‘Queen of the hills’. It is noted for its
tea industry, the spectacular views of Kangchenjunga, the world's
third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. 'Darjeeling tea', known as 'champagne of
the east' is most famous tea around the globedue to its great flavor
and aroma.
A
journey through the rolling hill slopes, mesmerizing lush green tea
gardens separated by meandering silvery mountain streams, high Sal
forests, quite ethnic villages, vast meadows with a blue outline of
the great Himalayan ranges in the horizon, endless sky…. It is
Dooars. 'Duar' means door in Nepali and Bengali languages, and the
region forms the gateway to Bhutan & North East India.
Are
you thirsty? Need some fresh mango juice? No need to opt either
Tropicana or Fruti. Malda is your destination for real teste of
mangoes. Here you will find varieties of mangoes like Himsagar,
Dilpasand, langra, Fazli, Golapbhog which are far better than so
called famous Alphonso.
If you
have interest in history, then you can visit the Nawabs' city
Murshidabad, named after Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, the Dewan of
Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. But guys, beware of your girlfriend or
wife. As this district is the center of famous 'Murshidabadi Silk' &
'Baluchari silk' where price starts from minimum 5 digit number.
If you
have interest in art & sculpture, Bishnupur is your next
destination which is famous for world famous Terracotta art.
Do you
know the name of 1st Indian who won the Nobel prize in
literature? Yes, Rabindranath Tagore. Our next destination is
Shantiniketan where Rabindranath founded an 'Ashram' was modeled on
the lines of the ancient gurukul system. Please don't mess up this
'gurukul' with Mohabbatein styled 'gurukul'. Here children get their
1st lessons from mother nature. The 'Ashram' was expanded
into a university named by 'Visva Bharati' which Tagore defined as
“where the world makes a home in a nest”.
We are
now very near to 'City of Joy'. Yes, you are only 150 km away from
India's third-most populous metropolitan city. Can you guess the
name? It is Kolkata, Calcutta,Kolikata. We Bengali believes “What's
in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as
sweet.” This city is Birthplace of Nobel laureate Rabindranath
Tagore. Home and resting place of Nobel laureate Mother Teresa &
Amartya Sen. Oscar recipient Satyajit Ray. Karmabhumi of Swami
Vivekananda. Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, also known by the name
'Rabindra Setu', was set up in 1874. It stands on two 270 feet high
pillars. This cantilever truss bridge was constructed without using
any nuts and bolts. Kolkata Metro is the first underground Metro
railway in India. India is all set to get an experience of one of
the world’s most marvelous inventions - first underwater metro.
This is a path-breaking project for India as it is the first time
that a tunnel has been constructed beneath a flowing river in the
country. The Mecca of Cricket the Eden Gardens is in Kolkata. Worlds
highest operational Railway Station and longest recorded Railway
Platform is in Howrah which is called the twin city of Kolkata. You
can experence India's only operational cable-car Tramways and hand
pulled Rickshaws in kolktata only.
Do you
feel hungry? While cruising through the city of Kolkata, you will
come across several restaurant or roadside food stall. Choose from a
plethora of options such as Chinese, Continental, Indian and Mughlai
and even European delicacies - the cuisine of Kolkata will leave you
craving for more. Bengali cuisine means an emphasis on fish with
rice. I had once read somewhere that “Illish swims thrice: once in
water, once in oil and once in mustard.”. Simply fried in oil,
cooked with chillies and mustard or even steamed with turmeric paste,
red chillies and coconut paste and wrapped in banana leaves – have
it anyway you want. You will be unable to stop yourself from asking
for a second helping. Varieties of fishes are available here either
sea fish or freshwater fish. You can taste your very own phuchka,
aaloo kabli,jhal-muri,roll, muglai parantha as snacks. Sweets occupy
an important place in the diet of Bengalis and at their social
ceremonies. Rosgulla The most famous of all Bengali desserts. Do try
ladi-keny, Chamcham, Rasmalai, Shondesh & also Misti dahi.
Your
tour will not complete if you skip Sundarbans, the world's largest
active delta, formed by the mighty river the Ganga, Brahmaputra &
Meghna. Situated at lower end of gangetic West Bengal, it is criss
crossed by hundreds of creeks & tributaries. It is the single
block of tidal, halophathic mangrove forests in the world.The name
have been derived from the 'Sundari' trees, that are found here.This
world UNESCO world heritage site is the home place of World famous
'The Royal Bengal Tiger', chetal deer,crocodile & snakes. If you
love traveling through dense forests with wild animals & even
wilder nature surrounding you, then you must opt the 1N/2D Sundarban
